Identifying Wires on Your Old Switch
Looking at how your existing light switch is wired up can help you identify which wire is which in your wall box. Once you’ve identified your wires, installing the Brilliant Control is much easier.
Common Terminal: When installing a Brilliant, the Common wire hole is where you will insert your “Line” or “Load” wire into the Brilliant base. Brilliant can automatically detect which wire is “Line” and which is “Load”, so it doesn’t matter which of these two wires you install into the Common wire hole.
Ground Wire: This wire is green or bare copper, and may or may not be attached to your old switch. If it’s not attached to your old switch, it may be clustered together in a bundle in the back of your wall box. This wire is needed to install Brilliant, and is required for safety. This is installed in the wire hole labelled with the ground symbol (shown below).
Line Wire: This is the wire that provides the 120 Volts of power to your switch from the power company. It is usually a black wire. The Brilliant Control can automatically detect which wire is “Line” and which is “Load”, so they are interchangeable when installing in a single-pole configuration. In a 3-way configuration, the "Line" wire should be connected to the "Common" terminal of the Brilliant Control.
Load Wire: This is the wire that connects your switch to your light bulb or other “load” (ie: a fan or other appliance). It is also usually black. The Brilliant Control can automatically detect which wire is “Line” and which is “Load”, so they are interchangeable when installing in a single-pole configuration. In a 3-way configuration with a traditional rocker switch, the "Load" wire should be connected to the "C" terminal of the Brilliant Control. You can learn more about multi-way configurations by reading these two support articles.
Setting up multiple Brilliant Controls on a multi-way configuration Installing the Brilliant Control in 3-way and 4-way configurations
Neutral Wire: This is usually only attached if your old switch is a smart switch or certain dimmer switches. It is usually a white wire. If it’s not attached to your old switch, look for a cluster of white wires bundled together in the back of your wall box. The Brilliant Control requires a neutral wire to install. To read more about the neutral wire, you can check out this support article here.
Traveler Wires: These wires are only for multi-way configurations and always occur in pairs. They are often a red or black wires. They connect the Brilliant Control to another multiway switch . To find out more about multi-way configurations, check out the support articles above in the "Load Wire" section. When installing the Brilliant Control in 3-way configurations, the traveler wires will be installed in the wire holes labelled “L1” and “L2”.

Replacing Incompatible Switches on Multi-Way Circuits
Multi-way circuits are controlled by more than one switch, meaning you can turn your light on and off from more than one location. A common instance of this is when you can control your stairway lights with switches located at both the top and bottom of a stairway.
Not all multi-way configurations are compatible with Brilliant. However, by making the right changes, you can make your Brilliant work with your multi-way circuit. You can learn more about which configurations are compatible here.
If you have a dimmer anywhere in your multi-way circuit, you can easily replace it with an on/off switch. This is an easy and inexpensive way to turn your incompatible configuration into one that works with your Brilliant. These Leviton Rockers are classic and simple to install.
We currently do not support a four-way configuration with the Brilliant placed in the middle of the circuit.
If this is your desired configuration, the best way to make this compatible is to purchase another Brilliant! You need to put a Brilliant at either end of the circuit, you can choose which end makes the most sense for you.
To purchase another Brilliant, check out our product line here.
Identifying Light Bulb Wattage On a Circuit
The easiest way to identify the wattage on any one circuit is to see which light bulbs turn on and off when you flip the switch on and off. From there, you can look directly at the light bulbs to find out the wattage.
Wattage ratings are typically found printed on your light bulbs. Common places that they can be found are on the side of the bulb, on the base of your bulb, or on the top of the bulb.
If the switch controls more than one bulb, add the wattages together to get the total wattage on the switch.
To see which light bulbs and wattage limits Brilliant is compatible with, check out our article here.
If you discover your wattage or bulb selection is incompatible with Brilliant, check out this article to help you choose the best bulbs for Brilliant.
Setting up multiple Brilliant Controls on a multi-way configuration
Please first confirm that your multi-way configuration has been properly set up as per this guide.
3-Way Configuration (Light is controlled by 2 different Brilliant Controls):
- Which Brilliant Control is connected to line? - This control should be set to "Always On" by going to Settings --> Light --> under Device Info tap Re-configure Light --> Controlled by ONE light/device --> Power Outlet (Always On).
- Note: For 2+ Switch Brilliant Controls, you need to do this for each separate light.
- Which Brilliant Control is connected to load? - Configure this control by going to Settings --> Light --> under Device Info tap Re-configure Light --> Controlled by ONE light/device --> Proceed to setting up each light to the type of configuration desired. In this scenario, we are effectively setting up this Brilliant Control as the “Primary switch”, and the remaining control will serve as remote controls for the primary switch.
- Go back to the Brilliant control connect to line. After doing the above, you now need to configure this line side control to be a remote control for the Primary switch (load side).
For 1 Switch Brilliant Controls:
- Go to Settings --> Gesture--> Make sure "Single Finger Gesture" is ON --> In the dropdown menu under Single Finger Gesture, choose the light/device that is connected to load.
- For 2+ Switch Brilliant Controls:
Go to Settings --> Sliders --> Make sure "Slider # Controls:" is ON --> In the dropdown menu under Device, choose the corresponding light/device that is connected to load. Do this for each slider.
4-Way Configuration (Light is controlled by 3 different light switches):
If all of the switches are Brilliant:
- Which Brilliant Control is connected to line? - This control should be set to "Always On" by going to Settings --> Light -->under Device Info tap Re-configure Light --> Controlled by ONE light/device --> Power Outlet (Always On).
- Which Brilliant Control is the middle switch? - This control should be set to "Always On" by going to Settings --> Light -->under Device Info tap Re-configure Light --> Controlled by ONE light/device --> Power Outlet (Always On).
- Which Control is connected to load? - Visit Settings --> Light and set each light to the configuration you want. For the question "Is this light controlled by multiple switches?" select "No".
- Go back to the Brilliant control connect to line - Go to Settings --> Sliders --> Make sure "Slider # Controls:" is ON --> In the dropdown menu under Device, choose the corresponding light/device that is connected to load.
- Go back to the middle switch - Go to Settings --> Sliders --> Make sure "Slider # Controls:" is ON --> In the dropdown menu under Device, choose the corresponding light/device that is connected to load.
In this scenario, we are effectively setting up one Brilliant control as the “Primary switch”, and the remaining controls will serve as remote controls for the primary switch.
If there are a combination of Brilliant and rocker/toggle switches:
Which Control is closest to load? On this control, please visit Settings --> Light Settings and make sure that the light is configured to say that there ARE multiple switches controlling the light.
Rename this light so you will remember it in future steps.
On all other Brilliant Controls on the multi-way circuit, please visit Settings --> Light Settings and "Re-Configure" this light to be NOT Multi-way and to be set to "Always On"
Setting Gestures and Sliders
To control the Primary light on any other Brilliant Control using a single finger swipe or slider gesture, please visit Slider Settings or Interaction Settings to appropriately set the device.

We are currently in progress on a user-friendly way to guide you through this process. Stay tuned!
Connecting Brilliant when it is the only switch controlling the same lights
When Brilliant is the only switch controlling the lights on a circuit, this is called a "single-pole" set up.
Insert the wires from the wall into the terminal holes in the Base. You may need to straighten them out with pliers, or strip them 7/16" with a wire stripper to ensure there is no exposed wire. Attach the wires to the terminals by tightening the screws on the sides of the Base until they are secure.
- Connect the Neutral wire to one of the “N” holes on the Base. If there are multiple Neutral wires, see our article on wire nuts and wire extensions for how to connect them together.
- Connect the Ground wire to one of the “⏚” holes on the Base.
- Connect either the Load or Line wire to one of the “C” holes on the Base. It doesn’t matter whether you connect the Load or Line to the “C.”
- Connect the remaining Load or Line wire to the “L1” terminal.”
Double check your wiring before inserting the Base back into the box. With a single switch, nothing should be connected to the “L2” terminal.
